I just got to the dorms, and I’ve got my room setup. Here’s what I’m running with:

  • Thinkpad X200
    • 4GB Memory
    • 120 GB HDD
      • Full disk encryption with LVM
  • OpenSUSE 13.2
  • External 500 GB (unencrypted) HDD
  • Auxillary monitor (1280p is nothing though)

Initial Thoughts

OpenSUSE is pretty cozy. Zypper seems like a nice upgrade from the old apt-get in Debian and Ubuntu. I personally haven’t used YaST too much, but it seems pretty well done… too bad I use command line more than the GUI.

Firefox is pretty snappy, and I’m having a good time with XFCE4 (a long-needed change from gnome-shell).

All in all, I really like this new system.

Too bad I nuked a Raspberry Pi installing Libreboot on this thing.

Transition

I’ve had a pretty good transition so far. I copied all my dotfiles onto the external HDD along with my music and everything is going well. The only dotfiles I didn’t copy were for firefox (~/.mozilla) and I used Firefox Sync instead. Sync will be more convenient in the future whenever I get home to my desktop.

I’m loving the mouse nipple on this thing. I’ve accidentally hit it a few times while pressing the G H and B keys, but it isn’t that big of a deal. The click + cursor setup on Thinkpad’s is absolutely genius. I can’t imagine using a standard trackpad ever again. The mouse on this thing is f***ing beautiful.

That’s all folks! (This is a low quality post, but you read it anyways.)
